THE TOP 3 GOALS FOR CAREGIVERS TO LIVE BY IN 2018

Saskia JenningsCaregiver Resources

women-caregevers-wellbeing-selfcare-family-boomers

Time is flying, we entered a new year. Do you dare thinking about New Year’s resolutions or is your mind spinning with all the ‘must-do’s”, ‘can’t haves” and “there’s never time for _______ (fill in the blank) anyways”?

Of course you love your mom and dad, of course you take care of them… but what about you? Who cares for you?

I get it, when you care for your loved one your life may be turned upside down. You deal with things and situations you never believe would happen or become a part of your life… but they do. Nowadays they call it your “new normal”.

Your ‘new normal’ requires that you take good care of yourself in the first place so…  have you set your New Year’s goals? If yes, great! And I hope the goals I suggest here are high on your list. If not, why not making them a priority for your own sanity and wellbeing?

Your goal #1: Be Happy.
How? By setting time aside every week to care for yourself.
And I don’t mean a movie-night, or a dinner with your friends. The reality is that most caregivers can’t really relax (aka shut off their phone) when they are away from their loved one and their outing doesn’t have a lasting impact as it’s tough to be fully present. So what do you do?
You take care of yourself by setting aside at least 2 hours a week and during your time alone you silence your phone and choose what makes you happy: a walk with picnic in the forest, bake your favorite cake, go shopping for a new pair of heels, read a book, go golfing, volunteer at your favorite charity, take a workshop, grab a towel and head for the ocean. Whatever makes you happy, go for it!  YOU DECIDE!

Your goal#2: Choose Your Friends Wisely.
Years ago I attended a workshop and the teacher told us to look at our phone contacts and delete every person that has a negative attitude and impact on your life. That definitely caused some uproar but despite it being a challenge (who wants to delete their negative uncle as he is family?!) it turned out that it was empowering and pretty easy to do.
If you want to delete negative people from your life, start with your phone. You don’t owe anyone an explanation, you won’t regret,  and it’s one less stressor. So go for it!  YOU DECIDE!

Your goal #3: Get support but don’t ask the whole world for help.
Love Facebook? Caregiver Support Groups are very popular, but are not always your best resource. The personal stories are often heart-breaking and since venting seems to be encouraged in different groups this often leads to more “raw” shares, rants and hurtful experiences in the endless stream of comments. And while you read it, your brain absorbs other people’s problems and sometimes it is hard to find one that offers the support that really helps you feel better, have less stress and (very important!) gives you better tools for caregiving.
And no one warned you for “possible disturbing images” in the group, right?
Just think for a moment: when you are 86 yrs old, you have Alzheimer’s and are not in control of your own life anylonger (try to picture it…) would you want to be exposed in public groups on Facebook? You can guess my personal answer: NO WAY!!”

What can you do instead?
Reach out and ask for support from professionals who know and understand your challenges. They are trained to help you find resources, stay focused and learn how you can manage your caregiving journey while dealing with your so called ‘new normal’. Without compromising your own health, values and relationships.  Think of your family doctor, social worker, Alzheimer’s live support group, service provider, church groups, caregiver coach, local family counselling services, geriatric care manager etc. When you care for a parent or elderly loved one, it is important that you acknowledge yourself as a caregiver so you can take the right steps to prevent overwhelm, guilt and burnout. No one else can do it for you. It is your life, go for it! YOU DECIDE!

Since I assume you love Facebook though, here are 2 of my favourite uplifting , fun and caring resources you can check out:  “Working Daughter” and “Happy Healthy Caregiver”.

To wrap it up… I am curious: are you ready to commit to these 3 goals in 2018?
Yes? Awesome, go for it!
If not, why?
Let me help you! Here’s a previous blog that you may like and the tips are really easy to implement in your life. Visit the blog.

Maybe you’re not sure if your parents are in need of more help? visit this blog by Silver Sherpa. It will help you recognize the warning signs.

Do you want to learn how these goals can actually help you?
Ready to dive deeper into your caregiver journey, discover strategies and tools to be your best self AND be the amazing caregiver who feels confident, valued, informed, happy and loved?
Let’s have a conversation. Leave me a short note and I will personally schedule a 20 min complimentary chat with you. Wanna go for it? YOU DECIDE!

Happy 2018! With love,

Haunted By Stress? Get Your On-The-Go Natural Stress Relievers

Saskia JenningsCaregiver Resources

You’re the Caregiver. You’re juggling work deadlines, looking after kids, shopping for your parents and picking up their meds, dinner schedules (“another take-out?”), housework (“Can I get a maid please?”)… and the “to-do” list doesn’t stop there. While you’re managing a million different things, your body is reacting to the pressures and stresses you’re encountering every day. Sometimes you even stress about how stressed you are because you know the negative impact stress can have on the body!

You know all of this, but there’s simply no time to slow down.

Thankfully, there are natural home remedies for on-the-go stress relief that may help you find a greater measure of calm and relaxation when you’re short on time. And I see great results with my clients as they experience the power of these essential oils.

stressaway

1.    Keep your purses armed with mini stress-fighting essentials

Wherever life takes the day, your purse is a staple you keep close. From stress balls for when your stress buttons are being pushed, to Stress Away essential oil blend, which can also provide simple and fast stress relief. Inhale straight from the bottle when you need your “fix” or apply topically. I’ll teach you safe ways to use the oils!

2.   Target stress areas with Orange and Cedarwood

cedarwood1Take a moment to check in with your body and identify how and where it’s reacting to stress. Are you feeling tense in your stomach or a heaviness in your chest? Local application using a carrier oil is one of the quickest and simplest ways to start feeling the stress-reducing effects of essential oils like Orange and Cedarwood.

Bonus: you’ll love the way the uplifting citrus aroma of Orange mixes with the warm, woody smell of Cedarwood.

  1. Dilute 1 – 2 drops each of Orange and Cedarwood essential oils with approximately 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
  2. Rub the oil gently onto the preferred area of the body with two fingers, using circular motions, making sure to avoid mucous membranes and eyes.
  3. Repeat this process up to three times per day as needed.

Tip: Since you never know when feelings of stress may strike, place this mixture in a roll-on bottle so you can take it with you.

Last but not least: Talking to someone who understand your challenges as a caregiver is a great way to start making changes for yourself and get out of the “haunted-by-stress-hamsterwheel”. Click here to leave me a message and I’ll get in touch with you, you won’t regret.

As a caregiver with no time you’d love a natural stain remover, right?

  • Empty lip balm container

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients except for the essential oil and laundry soap into a saucepan.
  2. Heat on low until the soap and all the particles are mostly melted.
  3. Remove from the heat.
  4. Add Thieves laundry soap and essential oil and evenly mix.
  5. Let cool slightly and empty the mixture into a ziplock bag.
  6. Cut the corner off and squeeze the liquid into your containers.
  7. Put on the lids, let completely cool.
  8. Lightly dampen stick with a wet washcloth before use to adequately spread around the stained area.
  9. Wash as you normally would.

By the way:  Thieves® Laundry Soap is THE BEST Laundry Soap I ever used in my entire life! Seriously! My clothes are so soft after washing. And when I throw my laundry into the dryer, with NO toxic dryer sheets, it comes out NON-STATIC!
Don’t be fooled by the price, as each bottle of the Laundry Soap is good for 62 loads. In my case… it last me just under a year (happy dance!).

A Hug In A Bottle to Uplift and Inspire You

Saskia JenningsCaregiver Resources

It’s been one of those days. Your presentation at work didn’t go as hoped, traffic was terrible, your mom’s appointment at the Doctor got postponed, it’s raining, your to-do list is 10 pages long, and someone ate the last of the leftover takeout you were planning on for dinner. All you want to do is crawl into bed with a blanket over your head and call it a day.

We all have days that feel overwhelming, hard, sad, or exhausting. Whether you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, lonely, or homesick, the pure, gentle aroma of essential oils can help you reset, reflect, and spiritually rejuvenate. Here are a few of our favorite essential oils for when you’re down in the dumps.

Valor Essential OilValor®: A hug for courage

It’s easy to identify the things we want to change about our lives, but it’s much harder to have the courage to actually take action. Fear of obstacles, embarrassment, and failure can leave us in a constant state of analysis paralysis. When you find yourself with a high-stakes day on the horizon, the aroma of Valor essential oil blend can help invite feelings of courage and strength.

Usage tip: Establish a daily practice of reciting self-affirmations in the mirror while inhaling this grounding blend to promote feelings of self-love and confidence.

Release essential oil blendRelease™: A hug for liberation

As we go about our day, we pick up emotional baggage—a hurtful comment, a negative thought, a troubling news article—and after a while it can start to build up and weigh us down. It’s critical that we take time each day to unload and free ourselves. The balancing aroma of Release essential oil blend can help you let go of negativity and lighten your spirit.

Usage tip: During a difficult conversation with a family member or loved one, diffuse this blend to help you stay open-minded and positive.

Present Time essential oilPresent Time™: A hug for gratitude

It’s easy to find yourself focusing so much on the regret of yesterday and the anticipation of tomorrow that you forget about the gift and beauty of today. Diffuse Present Time and practice mindful meditation to help yourself embrace and celebrate the present moment. Let its aroma remind you to slow down and notice life’s little joys—the mesmerizing beauty of raindrops streaming slowly down a windowpane, the sound of birds singing in the morning. There is beauty and wonder all around if you just take the time to look for it.

Usage tip: Diffuse this blend while tackling a mundane chore like laundry or dusting to help you stay mindful and grateful even during less-pleasant tasks.

Essential Oils: Nature’s Living Energy

Discover the incredible versatility of essential oils, and learn how millions use them to supplement a healthy lifestyle.

What are essential oils, and why use them?

Essential oils are natural, aromatic liquids found in plants that have been used for thousands of years in cultures all across the world. Essential oils are a natural way to support a healthy lifestyle, help maintain physical and emotional wellness, clean and purify your home, care for your hair and skin, and promote spirituality.

I use Young Living essential oils and household products for a reason…

When it comes to essential oils – farming, distilling, and sourcing is everything! Young Living has carefully curated farms all over the world, and uses a proprietary Seed to Seal® Process that produces the most authentic essential oils available today.

Unlike other essential oils on the market that rely on chemicals and processing, Young Living oils are never diluted, cut, or adulterated in any way. Using a proprietary, low-temperature distillation process that’s entirely chemical-free, Young Living sets the standard for purity, potency, and authenticity

I personally resonate with Young Living’s mission to create a healthier planet and helping families live a healthier life. This includes you, your children, your parents… and your pets! The founder Gary D. Young carefully crafts his essential oils, oil blends and products after in-depth research and testing in Young Living’s own labs as well as in third party labs.

I couldn’t do without my daily “dose of oils” and save on cleaning products because I only use the “Thieves® Household Cleaner”, my secret weapon for a healthy home! I use it for everything: from windows, to floors, to bathroom. Thieves® has been described as a “miracle blend” of purifying oils with a myriad of uses in and around your home. It’s not just safe, it’s revered for its support of healthy immune function and overall wellness.

Click here to visit my Essential Oils website and learn about a healthy lifestyle and chemical free home.

7 Simple Tips for Effective & Fulfilling Caregiving: Visiting Your Parents

Saskia JenningsCaregiver Resources

Every day I hear about caregivers who are struggling.
In my workshops people start smiling and breathing a sigh of relief when I share my practical tips.
People ask me: “Why is life as a caregiver so hard?”

You love your parent, you care for your parent and NOW WHAT?

Here are 7 practical tips that you can apply when visiting your parent(s), and remember… it always starts with You:

  1. Enter the house with a smile:
Take a couple of deep breaths before you go in for your visit, so you slow down and focus on a pleasant visit, a cup of tea together and the tasks at hand. Leave behind what happened earlier in the day, feel happy and smile.
  2. Connect with your parent:
Sit down for at least a few minutes before you start doing any tasks.
Ask how their day was, and take the time to listen. The best way for a nice conversation? Ask ONE open question and let them chat away. Don’t interrupt in any way.Put your hand over his/her: gentle touch works magic and make sure you smile. If that is a challenge, think how much you love that person. Making a connection and being present makes you both feel good.
Suggestion: if the TV is on, suggest to turn it off for a while or have the volume down.
  3. Talk slowly when you talk to your parent:
Our lives are often so busy and we tend to talk fast, way too fast for seniors.
No multitasking when you talk: do not put groceries away and talk to them while you have your back turned to them or are in another room.
  4. Let your mom or dad know what you’re doing:
Tell them what tasks you will be doing during your visit. Don’t rush through the house.
Slowing down is a skill you may and for sure will have to develop; you will notice that it has a positive effect on your loved ones and on yourself.
  5. Have your eyes and ears open for risks & “the unusual”:
Always keep your eyes open during your visit. Things can change in an instant and seniors are at risk for falls. Is there anything that gets in their way when they walk through the house? Are there any small rugs to trip over? Is the phone within reach? Are there any spills on the kitchen floor? Do you smell something different?
Be aware of the unusual: a burner on the stove left on, a tap running, an unlocked patio door, the phone off the hook, food left on the counter for hours, a broken lightbulb etc..
  6. Keep a journal at hand:
A notebook comes in handy. Keep it in your parent’s house so all family members can document their findings and experience about anything you want to remember and anything that is unusual (see #5)
Make sure that everyone involved knows who is responsible for follow-up. Think about it and make a decision.
  7. How long is your visit?
It’s helpful when you announce how long your visit will be. Give a reminder 10 minutes before you leave. Sit down for the final 5 minutes and connect (see #2). Understand the importance for them… and for YOU!

And don’t forget: feel good about your visit!
After you leave the house and you’re back in your car, take a moment to pat yourself on the back and feel good about your visit. Share your experience with your family members, friends and update them with facts and fun stuff, via phone, a letter or an email. Be aware that social media is not necessarily the place to post publicly all about your loved ones. Consider creating a private or secret Facebook-Group-Page that is only for family members and close friends, so it is safer to share any updates.

What’s next?
As you know, you can ask me anything. When the caregiving journey gets too overwhelming and you keep having thoughts about “my life and my health sucks…”  or “I am not sure if I’m doing it right…” , then connect with Saskia and book yourself a One-Off Emergency Care coaching session. You’ll be so glad you did!
